L'investigatore Gittes viene assoldato da una donna che si presenta come la signora Mulray per investigare sulla presunta infedeltà del marito. Riesce dopo diverso tempo a fotografarlo in compagnia di una giovane ragazza, ma si presenta al suo cospetto la vera moglie di Mulray che minaccia l'uomo. Intanto si ritrova il corpo senza vita del marito. Continuano quindi con molti pericoli le indagini di Gittes che lo condurranno da Noah Cross, padre della signora Mulray mentre la ragazza che tempo prima aveva fotografata era la sorella della donna. Le due donne cercheranno di fuggire dal padre possessivo, ma una finirà uccisa e l'altra ricondotta dal padre.
