Chicago, anni trenta. Un giornalista sta per sposarsi e per ritirarsi dal mestiere, ma un avvenimento di grande richiamo richiederebbe di nuovo il suo intervento professionale: è scappato un condannato a morte, un anarchico a suo modo candido e idealista, del cui caso il protagonista si è a suo tempo interessato. Il terribile direttore del giornale inventa trucchi di ogni genere per convincere il giornalista a riprendere il suo posto: quando finalmente quest'ultimo si farà persuadere, renderà pubbliche tutte le losche manovre elettorali che stanno alla base della vicenda.
