Cluny Brown, rimasta orfana, vive insieme a suo zio, un idraulico. Una domenica, mentre lo zio è fuori, arriva una chiamata per un intervento urgente in una casa altolocata e Cluny si precipita riuscendo a riparare il guasto. Il padrone di casa, uno scapolo impenitente, per ringraziarla le offre da bere, facendola ubriacare. Lo zio va su tutte le furie e per punirla decide di mandarla a fare la cameriera in un castello nei pressi di Londra. Lì Cluny incontra Adam Belinski, uno scrittore cecoslovacco che rimane folgorato dalla sua bellezza e dalla sua semplicità. Forse la felicitàè davvero dietro l'angolo...
