Il film racconta un episodio abbastanza singolare della Resistenza francese. Mentre gli alleati si avvicinano a Parigi, un ufficiale tedesco carica un treno con opere d'arte trafugate che intende portare in Germania. Un ferroviere francese, membro della Resistenza, si adopera in ogni maniera per evitare che il cospicuo patrimonio finisca nel paese nemico. Anche quando l'ufficiale lo mette alla guida del convoglio sotto la minaccia delle armi.
