Robert 'Mac' MacDougal è considerato il maggior ladro d'arte del mondo. Quando a New York viene rubato un Rembrandt, Mac diventa l'indiziato numero uno. Gin Baker, investigatrice delle assicurazioni, convince il suo capo ad affidarle la ricerca di Mac, per evitare che la compagnia sia costretta a pagare il premio di 24 milioni di dollari. Gin e Mac si incontrano a Londra, poi Mac conduce la ragazza nel proprio castello in un'isola occidentale della Scozia. Qui Mac addestra Gin a diventare una perfetta ladra d'arte, e lei lo asseconda, diventando una perfetta allieva.
