La ricchissima proprietaria di quasi tutti i latifondi e gli immobili di un piccolo stato è rimasta vedova. Poiché è giovane ed avvenente il Reggente dello Stato teme, a causa di un possibile secondo matrimonio, il passaggio allo straniero di tutta la ricchezza della patria, le cui finanze sono abbastanza scosse. Si addiviene in tal modo alla decisione di far sposare la giovane vedova con un cittadino del piccolo stato; e a tal fine è prescelto un giovane ufficiale della guardia. Egli ha l'ordine di recarsi a Parigi e di mettersi a disposizione dell'ambasciatore, che è colà accreditato presso il Governo francese. Il giovane conosce in un locale notturno, senza identificarla, la vedova e, ritenendola una donnina leggera, la corteggia; finendo con l'innamorarsene seriamente. La vedova dal canto suo, che si era recata nel locale per provare nuove emozioni, s'innamora del giovane ufficiale...
