Tre reduci americani della Seconda Guerra Mondiale tornano a casa, scoprendo che nel frattempo molte cose sono cambiate e che la vita militare li ha ormai trasformati: Homer, mutilato delle mani, cerca di recuperare il rapporto con la sua fidanzata e di superare la sua condizione di disabile; Al trova che la sua famiglia è cambiata e i figli sono cresciuti senza di lui; Fred si ritrova con la moglie che non lo ama più ed un lavoro insoddisfacente e si innamora della figlia maggiore di Al. Insieme i tre dovranno trovare la via per far conciliare le loro drammatiche esperienze con la vita di tutti i giorni, per poter rimettere insieme i pezzi ed andare avanti.
