Uno scienziato ha scoperto una sostanza che, inietta nel corpo umano, lo rende invisibile; non ha però trovato quella che lo ripristini nelle condizioni primitive. Iniettatosi la droga, che ha pure effetti eccitanti, produce attorno a sé sbalordimento e paura e, esaltato dalla sua straordinaria prerogativa, si propone di specularvi a tutto suo vantaggio. Ricercato dalla polizia, si nasconde in casa di un suo antico collaboratore, di cui con le minaccie si assicura la complicità. Ma, tradito, si vendica uccidendolo. Continua poi ad essere l'incubo del paese fin quando, caduta la prima neve, l'orme che egli lascia dietro di sé non ne segnalino la presenza rendendolo facile bersaglio ai colpi della polizia. Gravemente ferito, la morte lo renderà a poco a poco visibile.
