Storia di sangue e d'amore nella profonda provincia americana.Evelyn, sovrappeso e frustrata dall'indifferenza del marito, fa amicizia in un ospizio con l'anziana Ninny che le racconta, a puntate, una storia di molti anni prima che ha per protagoniste due amiche, Idgy e Ruth, in un bar vicino a una ferrovia (dove la specialità sono i pomodori verdi fritti). Idgy cresce ribelle e selvaggia e frequenta ambienti poco raccomandabili. Riuscirà a convincere l'amica Ruth a lasciare il violento marito, che ha sposato contro la sua volontà, e a tenersi il suo bambino.
