John Smallwood (Sellers) è un reverendo idealista che ha la cattiva abitudine di dire sempre la verita e di adottare un atteggiamento fin troppo ortodosso. Le sue azioni finiscono però per creare scompiglio nella ricca parrocchia in cui viene trasferito. Riesce persino a "portare la luce" nella vita di una vecchia signora, proprietaria di una fabbrica di lassativi, e a farle cedere tutti i suoi averi ai poveri. Purtroppo, così facendo causa il fallimento dell'azienda, che era anche la principale fonte di entrate per la comunità!
