In Inghilterra re Enrico II, in dissidio con la Chiesa, fa eleggere il suo ministro Thomas Becket arcivescovo di Canterbury. Ma Becket, una volta assunto il suo nuovo compito, diventa il più tenace assertore dei diritti ecclesiastici. La lotta fra i due diventa sempre più accesa, fino alla completa rottura. Enrico fa assassinare Becket dai suoi cavalieri mentre dice messa in cattedrale. Tratto da una commedia di Jean Anouilh, il film non ne conserva solo in minima parte la sottigliezza e lo spirito.
