Rahm Bowen (Newman) è un musicista jazz che ha deciso di andare a vivere sulla "rive gauche" a Parigi. Con lui parte Eddie (Poitier), musicista anche lui, ma più insofferente al clima degli Usa per questioni di pelle. A Parigi i due incontrano Lilan (Woodward) e Connie (Carroll). Entrambi s'innamorano di Connie, ma lei, di nuovo per questioni di pelle, preferisce Eddie.
