Sean Thornton è un uomo tranquillo che torna nella natia Irlanda per trovare la quiete lontano dal caos americano e dalla carriera di pugile nella quale ha accidentalmente causato la morte di un avversario. Mentre si reca a Innisfree, il paese in cui è nato, incontra e si innamora di Mary Kate Danaher, una rossa dal carattere forte. Successivamente, ricomperando la casa natale si inimica Will Danaher, fratello della donna amata. Questi inizialmente osteggia il fidanzamento fra i due, ma poi ingannato dagli amici di Sean cede. Scoperto l'inganno, il giorno delle nozze, si rifiuta di consegnare la dote. Questo causa un forte dissidio fra i due sposi, in quanto lei lo crede un debole che non sa far rispettare i loro diritti. Dopo una tempestosa prima notte di nozze, lei per la vergogna cerca di scappare in treno...
