In una sontuosa villa della provincia americana vive Harold, un adolescente cervellotico e pieno di problemi. Il giovane si diverte a simulare - come dirà al suo psicanalista - quindici suicidi per scuotere la madre, giovane avvenente e sventata, che ormai non lo sopporta più. Oltre ai tentativi di suicidio Harold coltiva tendenze necrofile: non si perde un funerale cui si reca con una macchina delle pompe funebri. In una di queste visite fa amicizia con Maude, una vecchina percorsa da fremiti di vita nonostante sia vicina al suo ottantesimo anno di età.
