Nell'Australia dei pionieri un ragazzino e una ragazzina vivono a poca distanza uno dall'altro, ma tra loro il solco sociale è incolmabile. Lui infatti è il figlio di contadini poverissimi, lei la ricca ereditiera di una potente famiglia. La sorte non è però stata benevola con la piccola che una grave malattia ha inchiodato sui una sedia a rotelle. Tra i due si stabilisce un contatto grazie a un puledrino di pony dal quale entrambi sono affascinati.
