A causa di una scommessa con Dio, Mefistofele cerca di portare sulla via della perdizione l’integerrimo medico e teologo Faust, un uomo fiero delle proprie capacità di discernimento e delle propria rettitudine. Il diavolo convince l’uomo a barattare la propria anima in cambio di maggior sapienza e di un piacere forte, in grado di fargli desiderare di fermare quell'attimo, che prenderà presto le sembianze della giovane Gretchen. La ragazza incautamente si innamorerà del medico ma sarà destinata a una tragica fine.
