Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, un portalettere ferito in un bombardamento viene ricoverato in ospedale. L'uomo, in attesa di essere operato, muore durante l'anestesia e un'infermiera, che afferma essersi trattato di un delitto, viene anch'essa uccisa. Le delicate indagini sono affidate al bizzarro e sagace ispettore Cockrill, il quale riesce a risolvere il caso con l'aiuto del dottor Barnes.
