Il penitenziario di Oswald, Oz per i detenuti, è un microcosmo narrato dalla voce di Augustus Hill, un detenuto che ci racconta la vita quotidiana nella sezione speciale di Emerald City. La violenza è onnipresente, ma è la routine di una non-vita che uccide lo spirito, che fa più vittime in questo mondo alternativo, fatto di odio e amore, terrore e noia, dominio e disperazione, un mondo che sembra molto diverso dal nostro, ma i cui abitanti sono il prodotto della nostra normalità.
