Nel 1607 alcune navi inglesi arrivarono sulle coste della Virginia. A bordo c'era il capitano John Smith, che ebbe l'incarico di esplorare la regione. Fu fatto prigioniero dalla tribù Powhatan. Pochahontas, figlia del capo gli salvò la vita e si innamorò di lui. Successivamente Smith tornò in patria, la principessa venne adottata dalla comunità inglese, si convertì al cristianesimo, sposò il colono John Rolfe, ebbe un figlio, venne condotta in Inghilterra, ricevuta a corta dal re Giacomo I, morì a ventidue anni durante il viaggio di ritorno nel nuovo mondo.
