La Pantera Rosa, il più prezioso diamante del mondo, è stato trafugato; si sospetta sir Charles Lytton, ritirato a vita privata nel sud della Francia. Viene incaricato l'ispettore Clouseau, che continua a far disperare il suo superiore, l'ispettore capo Dreyfus che decide di vendicarsi. Clouseau subisce le imboscate di Cato, il domestico, e nuovi attentati a suo danno, ma nonostante tutto parte per investigare. Si avvia in incognito sulle tracce di sir Charles che però è appena partito per scoprire la verità riguardo al furto che non ha compiuto. Clouseau insegue lady Lytton partita per Gstaad sempre in incognito. Esasperato Dreyfus decide di dargli un ultimatum: arrestare lady Lytton o finire alla Martinica. Clouseau va ad arrestare lady Lytton quando anche sir Charles arriva nell'hotel, ma il colonnello Sharky minaccia tutti per prendere il diamante. Un attentato da parte di Dreyfus uccide il colonnello salvando Clouseau e i Lytton.
