John e Jenny sono sposi nell'inverno gelido del Michigan. Battezzato Marley sulle note del cantautore giamaicano, il Labrador biondo travolgerà la vita dei Grogan, "rosicchiando" mobili, progetti e certezze e invitandoli a vivere il presente a dispetto di quello che non è stato e di quello che deve ancora essere. Dopo Marley arriverà un bastimento carico di figli, guai e amore.
