Una ex ballerina di Broadway, Paula, vive a New York (nel West Side) con la figlia decenne Lucy, nata da una relazione con un attore che poi l'ha piantata. Anche Tony, col quale Paula aveva tentato di ricostruirsi una famiglia, la molla per andarsene a Roma. Prima, però, il cinico Tony ruba i risparmi della donna e subaffitta a sua insaputa l'appartamento. Il nuovo inquilino porterà la felicità per Paula e per Lucy.
