California 1917: Cal, figlio disamato di Adam, si ribella al padre severo, rivaleggia col fratello Aron e scopre che la madre, creduta morta, dirige un bordello. Da una parte del romanzo East of Eden (1952) di John Steinbeck, adattato da Paul Osborne, è una parafrasi (o un'interpretazione?) in chiave psicanalitica della storia di Caino e Abele dove il primo non è malvagio, ma disperato e cerca di trovare nell'amore la salvezza. 1° film a colori di Kazan e il suo 1° in Cinemascope (genialmente usato) e da lui prodotto. È anche il 1° film di Dean protagonista e rimane tuttora soprattutto come il suo ritratto. Oscar a J. Van Fleet nella parte della madre.
