Da qualche parte nell'Inghilterra vittoriana c'è un muro di mattoni che separa il villaggio reale di Wall da Stormhold, una città fantastica governata da un re malvagio e abitata da streghe e creature magiche. Al di qua del muro vive Tristan, un giovane garzone che sogna l'avventura e il grande amore. Figlio di una principessa del regno di Stormhold e di un inglese, il ragazzo decide di attraversare il muro per donare una stella alla ritrosa Victoria. La stella, Yvaine, è una fanciulla luminosa precipitata dal cielo alla morte del sovrano. Il suo cuore immacolato è bramato da Lamia, una strega crudele che vorrebbe strapparlo e divorarlo per riconquistare la giovinezza. Sul petto di Yvaine batte il rubino che permetterebbe ai sette principi, rivali e litigiosi, di regnare su Stormhold. Braccata dai desideri dei malvagi, spetterà a Tristan proteggere lo splendore di Yvaine.
