Cinque studenti di college partono su un camper alla volta di una casa nel bosco per trascorrere un week-end di assoluto relax. Dopo aver fatto rifornimento in una pompa di benzina gestita da un uomo inquietante giungono a destinazione. Ormai a loro agio nella baita, iniziano a giocare a obbligo e verità quando una botola si apre svelando una cantina colma di strani oggetti: di lì a poco saranno presi d'assalto da una famiglia di zombi, mentre da una sala-bunker un gruppo di tecnici osserva attraverso telecamere nascoste ogni loro mossa. Saggio analitico su tendenze, ossessioni e pratiche dell'horror, l'esordio al cinema di Drew Goddard comincia come il più piatto teen horror per mutarsi, di sequenza in sequenza, in un lavoro totalmente refrattario alla stabilità.
