Nel 1968 un'astronave statunitense approda sul pianeta Marte per cercare prove dell'esistenza di vita su di esso. Per cause misteriose, tutto l'equipaggio, tranne il colonnello Edward Carruthers, scompare. Poiché la nave spaziale non è in grado di ripartire, gli Stati Uniti inviano una seconda astronave, capitanata dal colonnello Van Heusen. Il colonnello Carruthers viene fatto salire a bordo della nave spaziale con l'ordine di arrestarlo e condurlo davanti alla corte marziale perché tutti credono che sia stato lui ad uccidere il suo equipaggio per impadronirsi di tutti i viveri. Carruthers prova a dimostrare la sua innocenza e parla a Van Heusen di alcune strane presenze. Nessuno gli crede finché due componenti dell'equipaggio non svaniscono nel nulla e ci si accorge della presenza di un clandestino a bordo...
