Saroo, un bambino di cinque anni, è da solo e, spaventato e confuso, si ritrova dopo un lungo viaggio in treno nella caotica Calcutta, lontano un migliaio di miglia da casa. Cercando di sopravvivere alla vita di strada, finisce per essere adottato da una coppia di australiani che lo cresce con amore a Hobart. Non volendo ferire i sentimenti dei genitori adottivi, Saroo seppellisce il suo passato e il desiderio di ritrovare la madre e il fratello biologici. Un incontro casuale però riporterà a galla il suo sogno, facendolo imbarcare in una delle più grandi avventure della sua vita.
