South Carolina, 1925. Dodge Connolly è un esuberante giocatore di football americano e un'adorabile canaglia. Irriverente delle regole e sfrontato con l'avversario, Dodge è capitano dei Duluth Bulldogs, una squadra di avvinazzati attaccabrighe che perde in una sola partita sponsor e ingaggio. Dopo aver sciolto a malincuore il proprio team, il capitano Connolly convince un agente maneggione a rilanciarli sul campo, reclutando il giovane e aitante Carter Rutherford. Eroe di guerra per caso e fuoriclasse del football per inclinazione, il ragazzo aiuta Doodge ad educare la squadra e a riempire gli stadi. Se una folla persuasa accorre a celebrare il giocatore combattente, una giornalista del Chicago Tribune non sembra credere all'avventura eroica di Carter nelle trincee delle Argonne. Indagando finirà per innamorare l'esordiente e il veterano. Soltanto uno conquisterà il territorio, avanzando sulle linee delle yards e nel cuore della bionda Lexie Littleton.
