Narra la storia di Jon, un musicista e compositore di teatro che da anni lavora come cameriere a New York, mentre scrive quello che spera sia il prossimo musical di successo di Broadway. Jon ha lavorato alla sua opera per anni e mancano pochi giorni alla presentazione ufficiale: è sottoposto a grandi pressioni da ogni parte, dalla sua fidanzata Susan, stanco di vederlo procrastinare, e dall'amico Michael, che ha abbandonato i suoi sogni per una sicurezza finanziaria e lo esorta a non fare lo stesso. Jon, intanto, vive tutto questo nel cuore della comunità artistica segnata dall'epidemia di AIDS...
