Justine arriva con il neomarito alla festa delle nozze che il cognato e la sorella Claire le hanno organizzato con un ritmato protocollo. Justine sorride molto ma dentro di sé prova un disagio profondo che la spingerà ad allontanarsi in più occasioni dai festeggiamenti provocando lo sconcerto di molti, marito compreso. Non si tratta però solo di un malessere esistenziale privato. Una grave minaccia incombe sulla Terra: il pianeta Melancholia si sta avvicinando e, benché il mondo scientifico inviti all'ottimismo, il rischio di collisione e di distruzione totale del globo terrestre è più che mai realistico. Tempo dopo, con Melancholia sempre più vicino, sarà Claire a invitare a casa sua la sorella.
