Anna Karenina, moglie di un alto funzionario di Stato e madre di un bambino, non sa resistere alla passione per un giovane ufficiale. Quando il marito, colpito dai pettegolezzi sucitati dalla vicenda, la pone di fronte alla scelta tra rimanere con il figlio o andarsene con l'amante, lei fugge con l'ufficiale. Di ritorno in patria, Anna cerca di riavvicinare il proprio figlio ma viene cacciata di casa dal marito. Anche tutti i suoi conoscenti la tengono a distanza per la sua situazione equivoca. Intanto il giovane ufficiale, stanco della vita inoperosa che conduce con lei, si arruola volontario e parte per la guerra serbo-turca. La donna misura il disastro della propria vita e si uccide.
