l protagonista è uno scrittore autore di un misterioso romanzo in cui ci si reca al 2046 per trovare i ricordi perduti. Nessuno è mai tornato da questo luogo tranne lui. Per il quale il numero è la memoria di una stanza di hotel in cui ha vissuto situazioni di cui vuole cambiare il ricordo. Il regista cinese raffina all'eccesso il proprio sguardo disperdendo la tensione emotiva che aveva saputo offrirci in In the Mood for Love. L'azione finisce così per ripercorrere temi a lui cari come l'amore impossibile o la chiusura dei sentimenti in spazi angusti.
