L'imprenditore Daniel Clamp (John Glover) vuole costruire un complesso commerciale a Chinatown, ma Wing (Keye Luke), proprietario di un negozietto e custode del Mogwai chiamato Gizmo, rifiuta di svendere. Wing muore e Gizmo finisce nelle mani del dottor Catheter (Christopher Lee), che si occupa di ingegneria genetica e lavora per Clamp. Anche Billy (Zach Galligan), vecchio amico di Gizmo, lavora per Clamp come disegnatore e, scovato il Mogwai, lo salva dalle grinfie di Catheter. Gizmo tuttavia, venuto accidentalmente in contatto con l’acqua, genera una serie di animaletti cattivi, i Gremlins, che subito mettono a soqquadro ogni cosa.
