In attesa di essere assunta dalla rivista di moda dei suoi sogni, Rebecca Bloomwood spende il suo tempo e il suo denaro nei negozi griffati della Fifth Avenue. Traumatizzata da un'infanzia dimessa e da una madre che la vestiva in saldo, Rebecca è decisa a scongiurare il trauma e a riempire l'armadio di abiti, gonne, biancheria, scarpe, borse, stivali e accessori di ogni genere. Compratrice compulsiva e bugiarda recidiva, Rebecca deve sopravvivere all'estratto conto della sua carta di credito e fare fronte ai suoi debiti. Assunta suo malgrado da una rivista finanziaria, finirà per innamorarsi del suo capo redattore e per inventarsi una rubrica che consiglia parsimonia e investimenti sicuri. Dietro l'angolo l'aspettano la terapia dell'acquisto, un impiegato del recupero crediti e naturalmente l'amore.
