Siamo all'Herrington High (situato nel mezzo dell'Ohio) nel quale gli insegnanti ed il personale vengono posseduti da parassiti. Gli insegnanti iniziano quindi a infettare gli studenti con l'organismo. Un gruppetto di studenti capisce la situazione e resiste. Tra questi abbiamo: Zeke Tyler (Josh Hartnett), un genio solitario che ripete il suo ultimo anno, i cui genitori sono sempre in viaggio, che vende una droga simile alla cocaina ai suoi compagni di corso; Stan Rosado (Shawn Hatosy), un burlone che decide all'ultimo anno di uscire dalla squadra di football per incentrarsi sullo studio; la fidanzata di Stan, Delilah Profit (Jordana Brewster), una ragazza popolare e vendicativa che è l'editor-in-chief della testata studentesca; Casey Connor (Elijah Wood), un disadattato picchiato costantemente dagli studenti con un debole per Delilah ed è un abile fotografo per il giornale studentesco.
