Nella seconda metà degli anni 2000 la Terra è stata devastata da una guerra nucleare che gli umani hanno combattuto e vinto contro gli invasori alieni. La Luna è stata distrutta e questo ha causato terremoti, tsunami e diversi sconvolgimenti che hanno reso il pianeta una landa desolata in cui è possibile solo scorgere qualche rovina di quel che è stato. In seguito alla devastazione l'umanità è in esodo su Titano mentre sul nostro mondo gli ultimi impiegati si assicurano che i grossi macchinari che prosciugano le risorse naturali (per generare energia utile alla vita sul nuovo pianeta) non siano distrutti dai pochi alieni rimasti. Due di questi impiegati, quasi arrivati al termine del proprio impiego, si imbattono in alcuni astronauti lanciati nello spazio decenni prima ma ora atterrati rovinosamente, che il sistema inspiegabilmente riconosce come "minacce".
