Inghilterra, oggi. Durante un blitz un gruppo di animalisti irrompe in un laboratorio dove alcuni scimpanzè vengono sottoposti alla visione forzata di immagini violente. Il ricercatore che studia le cavie avverte gli attivisti che gli animali sono affetti da un virus sconosciuto e pericoloso. Malgrado ciò, i membri del commando decidono di liberare gli animali, da cui vengono immediatamente attaccati. 28 giorni dopo, Jim si risveglia in una Londra deserta e spettrale.
