Nella (apparentemente) tranquilla provincia americana due bambine di sei e sette anni, Anna ed Eliza, escono a giocare insieme e svaniscono senza lasciare traccia. I genitori, fra di loro amici, reagiscono nei modi più disparati (e disperati): Keller, il padre della piccola Anna, comincia una caccia all'uomo senza esclusione di colpi, mentre sua moglie Grace si imbottisce di psicofarmaci per attutire il dolore e lo sgomento; Franklin, il padre di Eliza, cerca di non farsi travolgere dalla sete di giustizia di Keller, la moglie Nancy invece pare disposta ad appoggiarne i modi estremi. Il detective Loki avvia le sue indagini fra intoppi burocratici e depistaggi, e comincia a chiedersi di chi sospettare, dato che anche il comportamento di Keller si fa sempre più equivoco. E la cittadina di provincia rivela di avere più scheletri in cantina (letteralmente) di quanto si potesse immaginare.
