Nell'autunno del 1327 giunge in un maestoso monastero italiano il francescano Guglielmo di Baskerville con il novizio Adso per un incontro tra domenicani, francescani e delegati papali. Morti misteriose si succedono e le indagini di Guglielmo vengono ostacolate. Il delegato papale procede con metodo inquisitorio: eresia e omicidio per lui si identificano, ma la soluzione sta da un'altra parte.
