Alfie ha un lavoro in un garage della periferia londinese, ma soprattutto ha una passione: le donne. Una delle sue amiche, Gilda, rimane incinta e decide di sposarsi. Contemporaneamente Alfie viene ricoverato in ospedale e anche qui fa strage di cuori. Una sua conquista, Lily, resta a sua volta incinta e Alfie la induce ad abortire. Ma il peso degli anni, una certa insoddisfazione e un crescente senso di solitudine cambiano definitivamente l'eterno ragazzo Alfie.
