Mark Hogancamp mette in scena nel proprio prato le gesta di un suo alter ego di nome Hogie in un fittizio villaggio belga, durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Hogie è un pilota americano in lotta contro i nazisti e protetto dalle donne di Marwen, che sono poi la trasfigurazione delle donne che hanno aiutato Mark durante la sua terapia. Egli è infatti reduce da un pestaggio di natura omofoba e da una lunga ma insufficiente riabilitazione, tanto da aver perso sia la memoria sia la capacità di disegnare. Elabora la tragedia fotografando le scene che crea nel giardino, con bambole di donne eleganti e action figure di soldati. Quando arriva una nuova vicina, Nicol, Mark cerca di raddrizzare la propria vita e di liberarsi dalla dipendenza dagli antidolorifici.
