La pellicola comincia nel 1945 a Las Vegas. Frank Harris (Brad Pitt) torna da sua madre e la invita a fare un giro sulla sua nuova motocicletta, ma, coinvolti in un incidente, la madre muore. Con un grido di dolore viene trasportato dallo scienziato-cartoon dottor Mustacchi (grazie ad uno "spillo" che conferisce straordinari poteri) in un'altra dimensione, completamente animata chiamata “Mondo Furbo”( "Cool World" in lingua originale). Nel 1992 il vignettista Jack Deebs (Gabriel Byrne) sta scontando in carcere una condanna per l'assassinio dell'uomo che ha trovato a letto con la propria moglie. Durante la sua pena detentiva, ha visioni del Mondo Furbo e della sexy, Holli (Kim Basinger). Jack passa il tempo generando una serie di fumetti basata sulle sue visioni del Mondo Furbo. Subito dopo la scarcerazione dalla prigione torna a casa sua a Las Vegas, dove Jack viene trasportato nel Mondo Furbo da Holli.
