Ispirato a un'antica leggenda popolare cinese, è la storia di Mulan, unica figlia della famiglia Fa che vive in un piccolo villaggio della Cina. Quando il feroce capo degli Unni Shan-Yu minaccia di invadere il paese, il saggio imperatore diffonde un proclama con cui chiede a ogni famiglia di mandare un uomo a combattere nell'armata imperiale. Per impedire al padre, anziano e malato, di partire, Mulan si traveste da uomo e si unisce all'esercito. Con l'aiuto di Cri-Cri, il suo grillo portafortuna, e di Mushu, un minuscolo dragone che vuole riconquistare il ruolo di genio protettore della famiglia, Mulan affronta innumerevoli avversità.
