Louis è un ladro di materiali edili quando lo incontriamo, non è chiaro cosa abbia fatto prima ma ora ruba rame, ferro e simili per rivenderli sottoprezzo ai cantieri con un obiettivo più grande: trovare un vero lavoro in una congiuntura economica non facile. Tuttavia nessuno assume un ladro. Un giorno è testimone di un incidente stradale e vede una troupe televisiva accorsa per riprendere l'accaduto, capisce che è un vero lavoro e uno che paga ma nemmeno in questo caso trova qualcuno pronto ad assumerlo così pensa di poter fare da sè e con i propri metodi (il furto) ruba il necessario per comprare un'attrezzatura di base e iniziare a girare le strade di Los Angeles in cerca di incidenti, furti e cronaca dura da rivendere ad un'emittente locale con pochi scrupoli. Quando il business si fa più serio aumenta anche la sua abilità ma non il suo senso del limite e dell'etica verso le vittime.
