I 40 giorni al fronte, in Iraq, di una squadra di artificieri e sminatori dell'esercito statunitense, unità speciale con elevatissimo tasso di mortalità. Quando tutto quel che resta del suo predecessore finisce in una "cassetta del dolore", pronta al rimpatrio, a capo della EOD (unità per la dismissione di esplosivi) arriva il biondo William James, un uomo che ha disinnescato un numero incredibile di bombe e sembra non conoscere la paura della morte. Uno che non conta i giorni, un volontario che ha scelto quel lavoro e da esso si è lasciato assorbire fino al punto di non ritorno.
