La tranquilla cittadina di Chamberlain nel Maine è la casa della conservatrice e religiosa Margaret White e sua figlia Carrie. Carrie è una dolce e remissiva emarginata dalla società a causa dell’isolamento impostale dalla madre. La signorina Desjardin, l’insegnante di ginnastica, cerca invano di proteggere Carrie dalle perfide compagne di classe, guidate dall’arrogante Chris Hargenson. L’unica a pentirsi delle sue azioni è Sue Snell, la migliore amica di Chris, che per ripagare il male convince il suo ragazzo, il rubacuori Tommy Ross, a portare Carrie al ballo di fine anno.
