Siamo nel 2054, a Washington, dove è stato messo a punto un sistema capace di prevedere i crimini, dunque prevenirli. Niente di particolarmente tecnologico: semplicemente tre umani dotati di capacità paranormali. Si chiamano pre-cog, da precognitives. Vivono in una piscina e hanno visioni che poi trasmettono a un secondo livello, a un'unità di pronto intervento, il cui eroe è John Anderton. Ma ecco che i veggenti a un certo punto indicano proprio John come futuro omicida di un tale che non conosce. Dunque il detective comincia la caccia a se stesso, naturalmente c'è la possibilità di qualche trucco, qualcuno per esempio potrebbe fabbricare non false prove, ma false visioni. Da qui una corsa contro il tempo, che è breve
