Enrico VIII regna sull'Inghilterra e desidera un figlio maschio che la moglie, Caterina di Aragona, non sembra essere in grado di dargli. Sir Thomas Boleyn (Bolena per noi italiani) vede nella figlia Anna una potenziale attrattiva per il re che va colta nel momento in cui costui verrà ospitato in casa per una battuta di caccia. Le cose non vanno come l'uomo vorrebbe perchè Enrico viene attratto dall'altra figlia dei Boleyn, Mary, che farà sua amante e da cui avrà un figlio. Ma, nel frattempo, Anna (temporaneamente inviata presso la corte di Francia) ha fatto ritorno in Patria ed appare al re sotto una luce diversa. Riuscirà a farla divenire sua moglie ripudiando Caterina e imponendo lo strappo con la Chiesa Cattolica che porterà alla formazione della Chiesa Anglicana. Ma anche questa sarà una relazione tormentata.
