Nel 1962, dopo la chiusura di uno dei migliori club di New York in cui lavorava, il buttafuori italoamericano Tony Lip deve a tutti i costi trovare un lavoro per mantenere la sua famiglia. Accetta di lavorare per il pianista afroamericano Don Shirley e decide di seguirlo in tour nel sud degli Stati Uniti. Nonostante le differenze e gli iniziali contrasti, tra i due si instaurerĂ  una forte amicizia.
