1969. Penny Chenery è una classica casalinga americana con marito e 4 figli. Alla morte della madre e con il padre affetto da demenza senile, si trova a dover decidere cosa fare dell'allevamento di cavalli in cui è cresciuta. Il fratello professore di Economia ad Harvard (e anche il marito avvocato) vorrebbero disfarsene offrendolo al miglior offerente ma lei non è d'accordo. Dato che due giumente sono incinte di un cavallo pregiato e potendo avere la proprietà di uno dei due puledri Penny ottiene quello che verrà prima chiamato Red One (e così sarà per sempre per il suo stalliere) e poi Secretariat. Il cavallo dimostrerà, nonostante le sue caratteristiche di velocità ma non altrettanto di tenuta sulla distanza, di poter essere un fuoriclasse.
